SEO Ultimate Review
This Review was done on 9/30/12. READ THE CHANGELOG to see what awesome features might have been added since then!
If you’re looking to skyrocket your website to the front page of Google, Bing, Yahoo, or any other search engine, you will need to do some on-page SEO. One of the best SEO Plugins I’ve used is SEO Ultimate. Over the past couple years, I’ve gotten back into WordPress hardcore, and I stopped coding websites and started using strictly WordPress, and as such, I’ve been on the hunt for the Ultimate SEO Plugin.
My hunt for the Ultimate SEO Plugin leads me to the SEO Ultimate Plugin (drumroll)
Ironic that, after months of searching for the Ultimate SEO Plugin, I found the SEO Ultimate Plugin By SEO Design Solutions. This SEO Plugin is amazing, the fact that it’s made by an SEO Company goes to show how much these SEO guys care about their customers; offering the SEO Ultimate Plugin for FREE! Now some Webmasters and SEO Gurus suggest that you use the WordPress SEO By YOAST; I will review that plugin a different time, as BY FAR, my favorite is SEO Ultimate Plugin by SEO Design Solutions, as it has the most features (which you can disable if you’re not using) and is one of the most customize-able SEO plugins I’ve ever come across. Below is a list of Modules for SEO Ultimate Plugin by SEO Design Solutions as of September, 2012. You can click on each item to get a thorough description of each SEO Module (it will take you down to the appropriate part of this post, since this post is HUGE).
SEO Ultimate Plugin, 404 Monitor Module:
This module will keep track of all 404 errors your website encounters. 404 errors happen when a web-browser or a user (or even a spider/bot) cannot find something that is referenced or linked to in your website. Most of these 404 errors will come from Google Bots or MSN Bots indexing your site, so it’s important to try to keep this fixed. You can get a 404-redirection plugin to minimize this number (click here to get taken to our suggested plugins page and scroll to the 404-plugins).
Author Highlighter Module:
In order to use the Author Highlighter Module on the SEO Ultimate Plugin, you will need to add your Google Profile to your URL Profile. Author Highlight is an awesome thing that Google does, based on your Google+ Profile. This will allow you to show your profile picture in Google Search Results, See the screenshot below:
If you have multiple users on your site, and each one sets up their profile with their Google+ Profile, this will label each Google Search Result with the appropriate Author(user)’s profile picture.
The SEO Ultimate Plugin’s Canonicalizer Module will allow you to generate canonical tags for your website and links as well as enable a 301 redirect for nonexistent pagination. If you’re not sure what Canonical links and tags are, you can read more about them here.
Code Inserter Module:
The Code Inserter Module on SEO Ultimate is one of the cool features that i started using the plugin for. You can add code that you want it to insert in the following Locations without editing any html: Insert Code into the <head> tag, Insert code before the post/page content, insert code after post/page content, and insert code into the Footer. If you’re thinking this is useless, and you’d rather edit the WordPress Theme directly, keep this in mind: when you update the theme, it will remove your edited content from the theme HTML, whereas if you use the SEO Ultimate Plugin’s Code Inserter to insert your html code (Google tracking code, ads, etc), you will not have to worry when updating or changing themes, it carries over as long as the SEO Ultimate Plugin and the Code Inserter Module are active.
Deep-Link Juggernaut (Deeplink Inserter):
The Deeplink Inserter Module is amazing. Instead of installing a separate plugin for creating Deeplinks on your website, you can use this tool! You enter the text string (anchor text) that you want the deeplink juggernaut to look for, enter the Destination you want it to go to, and enter the title you want to give those links (the little pop-up text when people mouse-over your links)! Sounds sweet huh? Well, check this out: you can also select if you want the links to be nofollow (so that Search Engine Spiders don’t follow them) and whether you want them to open in a new window (which is great if you’re entering deeplinks to content that might be off-topic but still want the readers to keep their current window open, as well as for external links since you don’t want your visitors LEAVING your site, even if they’re clicking on an Advertising Link). Check out the screenshot below to see an automatic DeepLink for the phrase “WordPress Dashboard”:
File Editor Module:
The File Editor Module in the SEO Ultimate plugin title is kind of misleading; it allows you to edit files, yes, but it only allows you to edit Robots.txt and your .htaccess file. If you don’t know what either of those are, I would suggest you disable the file editor module, as you can kind of mess up your website (which you don’t want)
Link Mask Generator:
The Link Mask Generator is an awesome tool; it allows you to Hide / Mask your links, so if you have affiliate links, you might want to use this to MASK your links so instead of the links being something along the lines of www.amazon.com/product…/…, they would be www.yoursite.com/go/custom-link-name; Pretty cool right? You can also set the link mask generator to only be active on a certain post instead of on your entire site. You can also change the /go/ part to whatever you want (i.e. /external/ or /store/, etc.) as well as make the links nofollow (if you don’t know what Nofollow is, it refers to the rel=”nofollow” part of a link, which tells search engines’ spiders and bots not to follow that link to the destination, keeping the spiders/bots indexing YOUR site), which I would recommend, if you’re making an affiliate-based site, as Google doesn’t much LIKE affiliate links :)
Linkbox Inserter Module:
The Link-box Inserter is a cool little tool to add a little “Link to this post(via HTML Link):” box at the ends of your Posts, Pages and Wherever else you put the shortcode to call the linkbox. See the bottom of the post for the HTML Link Box, it looks like this:
Meta Description Editor Module:
The Meta Description Editor module on the SEO Ultimate Plugin is a pretty nifty tool if you want a certain page or post to target a certain word. Using this, you can specify what you want the search engines to display when they display your post in the search engine results. This is a good idea if you’re targeting a specific post, but if you’re writing a long article, it might be better to let the Search Engine choose whichever phrases it wants to display, as that might get you more traffic, since it would display strings of text that someone searches. Using this module, you can set different descriptions for blog Homepage, Posts, Pages, Media, Categories, Tags and Post Format Archives.
Meta Keywords Editor Module:
The Keywords editor is much like the Meta Description editor but for the Meta Keywords. Many say that search engines do not care for meta keywords anymore due to people abusing it in the past, but I say, if it does no harm, then use it. Just because Google doesn’t search it doesn’t mean that other search engines don’t use the meta keywords in their algorithm.
Meta Robot Tags Module:
If there is content on your site that you do NOT want search engines to index (such as login pages, etc), then you can use the Robot Tags Editor to input “Rel=”nofollow” Meta Tags”. If you’re not sure what you’re doing, don’t use this module, as it can de-index your site if you put the wrong settings.
Built In WordPress Open Graph Integrator:
Opengraph is Facebook’s way of integrating your site content onto Facebook’s website. Using Opengraph is recommended, as it will allow you to tweak what people will see when someone clicks LIKE on your URL, etc. Kind of like the Meta Description Editor Module is for Search Engines, this is for Facebook and Twitter.
The settings Monitor currently only shows 2 things: Whether or not your WordPress Website or WordPress Site is visible to search engines, and whether or not your Permalinks (human friendly URL) includes the Posts’ “Slug”, i.e. http://www.allstuffweb.com/this-is-the-post-slug/ )
Title Tag Rewriter:
SEO Ultimate’s Title Tag Rewriter is AWESOME, but I have one complaint: it does not count how many characters you have typed, and since Google Truncates the Title at 160 Characters (as of me writing this), I end up using a website like http://www.MetaLength.com/ to see how long I want the title.
SEO Ultimate Plugin’s Miscellaneous Addons:
You might have noticed there’s a “Miscellaneous” option; this is everything else. One of the things you SHOULD set right away is your Webmaster Verification; You can set up your Google Webmaster Tools account and your Bing Webmaster Center Account with your WordPress website in just a few minutes! If you don’t have a Google Webmaster Tools and a Bing Webmaster Center acount yet, you should make one, this will help you see any errors that come up as well as get your site indexed faster and on a more regular basis.
